Uttarakhand is facing some serious environmental challenges that are impacting its people and landscape. In the past two decades, the state has lost over 3,000 square kilometres of its forest cover, leading to problems like soil erosion and the loss of wildlife habitats. The major rivers originating in the state, like the Ganga and Yamuna, are seeing reduced water flow, which is linked to shrinking glaciers and erratic rainfall patterns.

Landslides are becoming more frequent, with over 12,000 incidents reported between 2015 and 2023, largely due to unplanned urbanisation and road construction. Additionally, the over-extraction of groundwater is causing water levels to drop, threatening the livelihoods of millions who rely on agriculture.

Dwarika Prasad Semwal is making a significant impact in Uttarakhand by addressing the critical issue of deforestation. Recognizing the urgent need to restore the region’s forests, he initiated large-scale afforestation efforts, planting trees across vast areas to combat soil erosion and revive the natural habitat. He is doing this by skillfully uniting the community and the government, fostering a collaborative effort that ensures these initiatives are both effective and sustainable in the long term. Through his approach, local communities are empowered to take ownership of their land, which cultivates a strong sense of responsibility and pride in preserving their environment.

In addition to tackling deforestation, he has also turned his attention to the pressing water issues facing Uttarakhand. Understanding the critical role that water plays in the region’s agriculture and daily life, he has urged his community to create over 1,50,000 ponds. These ponds are designed to capture and store rainwater, helping to recharge groundwater levels and provide a reliable water source during dry periods. His efforts have sparked a movement, with communities actively participating in the construction and maintenance of these ponds, ensuring a sustainable solution to the state’s growing water scarcity.
