In India, labourers and farmers form the backbone of the economy, with agriculture employing around 42.6% of the workforce. Despite their crucial role, many face challenges such as low wages, lack of social security, and limited access to resources. Small and marginal farmers struggle with issues like inadequate irrigation, high input costs, and market access.

Established in 2004, VRDS (Vanasiri Rural Development Society) works on sustainable livelihood initiatives, benefiting over 10,000 families across 50-60 villages. VRDS addresses these problems through initiatives like labour banks. These labour banks organise and provide a platform for local labourers to find employment opportunities, ensuring fair wages and better working conditions. By facilitating skill development and offering resources, VRDS helps labourers and farmers improve their livelihoods and achieve sustainable development.

Their projects also include natural resource management, skill enhancement, and promoting community-based organisations. Key focus areas are children’s rights, education, environment, and agriculture, aiming to enhance living standards through infrastructure development and livelihood opportunities.
