MANUVIKASA

Ganapati aur pani laane ki ladai

A study using satellite data shows that over 30 large lakes in India have been drying up from 1992 to 2020. This includes 16 major lakes in southern India!

Lakes cover three percent of the Earth’s land and help control the climate by cycling carbon, but they are often not well managed. Around the world, satellite data shows a loss of 90,000 square kilometres of permanent water area, showing how serious the problem is. Climate change and human water use are the main reasons for the water losses and shrinking lake volumes in about 100 large lakes.

Manuvikasa focuses on rejuvenating lakes to enhance environmental conservation and community livelihoods in Karnataka. Their work includes restoring 277 large lakes and constructing over 3,000 farm ponds, significantly improving water resources. They also support sustainable agriculture through the formation of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and have uplifted over 37,000 women via Self Help Groups (SHGs).
